This paper summarizes knowledge obtained through 22 years of study of Alaska sheefish. Nine stocks of sheefish are described from the Kuskokwim River system north to the Kobuk-Selawik drainage. The sheefish of the Kobuk and Selawik rivers are the best understood population because their large size and the existence of an important trophy recreational fishery and traditional subsistence and commercial fisheries have focused attention on them. Considerable research was conducted on Kobuk-Selawik sheefish from 1964 to 1983. Information on stock status, patterns of growth, distribution, movement, food habits, and spawning is presented for the Kobuk River. Most spawning and recreational fishing takes place upstream of Kobuk near Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. ADF&G fish database code: N87ALT01YUCH
