Seasonal and Diel Variation in the Standing Crop of Fishes and Macroinvertebrates from a Gulf of Mexico Surf Zone

A study concerned with the seasonal and daily behavior of fish and macroinvertebrates in the surf zone of Horn Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. Fish and macroinvertebrates were collected using a seine from designated sample stations. Collections were made 6 to 8 times over a 24 hour period at varying times in the year. Specimens were identified and measured. The following environmental characteristics were recorded at the time of each collection: water temperature, salinity, wave height, beach profile, longshore current direction and speed, tide stage, and time. The results concerning seasonality, diel variation, and environmental effects are discussed and presented in tabular form. A species list shows scientific names, number collected, relative abundance, weight, and biomass.
