Seasonal and spatial variability in macrobenthos communities in Jamaica Bay, New York - an urban estuary

Macrobenthos were sampled at 27 sites in Jamaica Bay on a seasonal basis from October 1981 through November 1982. A sediment-correlated structure persisted for all seasons. Dominance was correlated with sediment organic content and % mud. Species richness increased with increasing % TOC. At muddy sand stations, species richness declined, it was inversely correlated with % TOC and heavy metal concentrations, and Ampelisca abdita was dominate. In sand and in mud communities, species richness was positively correlated with density.
