As part of the research necessary to the management of resources along Redwood Creek, this study investigated 16 tributaries draining diverse terrain. Since the early 1950's, these streams have contributed large amounts of sediment to Redwood Creek: the smaller, steeper streams move the excess sediment derived from landslides and other erosion efficiently along to Redwood Creek. The author documents the quantity of sediment derived from landslides in tributaries, along with examining causes in major storm events and changes in land use, including timber harvesting. Management recommendations include minimizing sediment input on tributaries, working with timber-harvest plans to reduce impacts, and some removal of debris (redwood logs create long-term barriers). Most of the report consists of appendices: A) tributary data; B) maps of individual reaches showing longitudinal profiles and large log jams, along with tables of stored sediment data for each section; and C) information on aerial photographs used in the study.
