Sediment sources and sediment transport in the Redwood Creek basin: a progress report

With a Congressional mandate to rehabilitate logged land in the Redwood Creek basin, field work on sediment sources, transport, and storage began in summer 1979. This report describes work accomplished through October 1980 (investigations of sediment storage in the main channel and in tributaries, and landslide surveys of the main channel and tributaries). It also describes data collection by the United States Geological Survey (from gaging stations, and regarding precipitation and mainstem channel cross-sections.) One finding is that tributary streams effectively move sediment delivered to them, holding only about 10 percent of that retained in Redwood Creek on a unit-length basis. This study is expected to produce a sediment budget for the Redwood Creek watershed which will be of scientific value, and important to management of the creek and its resources. Among the 10 figures are location maps, graphs of bed material and landsliding. The 32 tables include gaging station list and data; interpretation of graphic cross-section data; peak storm discharges; volumes of stored sediment in various reaches; landslide, stored sediment, and bank erosion data; and a preliminary sediment budget for Redwood Creek upstream of Highway 299.
