This article gives an overview of the whole FISH project of which specific papers are written in the same journal volume. The project was initiated in 1992 in response to a significant decline in pH and acid neutralizing capacities in Shenandoah streams. The study was designed to gather the necessary data to forecast changes in fish communities due to changes in stream chemistry
