This document reports on a project designed to obtain data regarding sand resources available for beach nourishment near the fort (Ft. Massachusetts) on West Ship Island.. According to the report, historical changes in the shoreline since the 1850s indicate the loss of more than 640 acres due to erosion. Other findings indicate that the most rapid loss is on the south shore and that old piles of rock and concrete around the old Ship Island lighthouse act as groins to restrict east-to-west sand movement along the north shore. The report concludes that the groins negatively impact the erosion problem and should be removed. Sand resources for beach nourishment were found north of the island, but were covered with 1 to 4.5 feet of mud.
