The small mammal community at Pinnacles National Monument

Seven trapping episodes were conducted at Pinnacles National Monument between November 1984 and May 1986. Twenty traps on each of 16 transects were established for the capture of small mammals. A total of 1,672 captures resulted in the identification of 15 species of small mammals within the National Monument (shrew, Virginia opossum, house mouse, California vole, Big-eared kangaroo rat, Heermann's kangaroo rat, deer mouse, Merriam's chipmunk, dusky-footed woodrat, desert woodrat, California pocket mouse, brush mouse, California mouse, pinyon mouse, Western harvest mouse, ornate shrew, California ground squirrel). Habitat variables were analyzed for the small mammal populations, and evidence of pig rooting was also documented for future reference. The report presents information on methodology, transect descriptions, trapping results, species accounts, habitat utilization information and a discussion of the impact of pig rooting and the distribution and diversity of the small mammal community within Pinnacles National Monument.
