This study was conducted at George Washington Carver National Monument and at Diamond Grove Prairie to provide supplemental information to the Resource Management staff which could be used in conjunction with recent vegetational analysis in determining the maturity of the prairie and the effectiveness of prairie management practices. This study includes information regarding the location of the site, historical prairie baselines, and previous studies conducted. Current prairie management practices are identified as well as their effects. Comparison studies at Diamond Grove Prairie are discussed. Study objectives are identified to include identification of small mammal species found, determination of any indication of disturbances , mean home range for each species found, and mean physical determinations of species found. The study was conducted during a specified period of time using established methods for capture/recapture, identification, data recording, and classification. Species identification, population density, home range movement and gender ratio are documented. Descriptions of each species includes habitat, range movement, physical characteristics, and food. Tables, identifying specific data collected for each species, are included. Conclusions based on the survey are included.
