The present study demonstrated that most of the black coatings in the Snowball Room in Mammoth Cave are fungus. Incorporated in this fungal growth is algae, lint, sediment particles, and carbon particles. This report discusses results of gas chromatography, microscopic, and spectrofluorophotometer analysis; fluorescence peaks associated with soup, cleansing agents, kerosene, and exotic plant growth; monitoring particulate matter in air; potential problems, limitations, and adverse impacts of restoration.
