These authors studied Roosevelt elk at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (in Redwood National Park), observing the Gold Bluffs herd. This herd was primarily cows and calves, with others associating less consistently. The paper discusses social organization, and the ways this relates to habitat use. The herd spent the greatest part of its time in the central area of the range, a particularly good source of food. Although this herd was not seen acting defensively, no elk from other herds were seen during the study in the beach and coastal prairie area occupied by the tagged Gold Bluffs herd. Tables and graphs illustrate the data.
