The process of natural development of communities on terrain which has never before been populated has long interested biologists and soil scientists. Community changes involving the conspicuous organisms of many of these primary successions have now been fairly well described. But many details are still unknown, especially with regard to the microbiota, as to species composition, community organization and function, and rates of change. Growing interest in microbial ecology is evident in the recent books of Kelley (1950), Garrett (1956), and Williams & Spicer (1957).
