Soils, vegetation trends and conditions were assessed on a large part of Bandelier National Monument during the summer of 1974. In practically all parts of the study area a deteriorating situation was found. Because of vegetation deterioration, serious accelerated soil erosion has occurred and ecological changes are rapid. Results of this investigation indicate that burros and/or cattle graze on most of the Monument and are largely responsible for its rapidly deteriorating condition. In order to initiate restoration procedures for returning the Monument to a natural habitat, it will be necessary to eliminate the destructive activities of these grazing animals. The most effective method to achieve this end is the exclusion of cattle and burros on the Monument. Although serious damage has already occurred on the Monument, if the current rate of deterioration is allowed to continue, the value of the area as a natural habitat will be further degraded.
