Soil survey of Fort Bowie National Historic Site with special emphasize [actual spelling] on soils having potential for adobe production
Post DF. 1978. Soil survey of Fort Bowie National Historic Site with special emphasize [actual spelling] on soils having potential for adobe production. University of Arizona
The paper examines any potential soils in Fort Bowie National Historic Site which could be utilized for unamended mud mortar and/or plaster preservation material. To manage national parks in a "natural" condition, quantitative standards of naturalness by which to guide and judge the achievement of this goal need to be developed. As structural elements of the vegetation alter through decomposition, burning, etc., it will become more difficult to determine the pre-settlement state of the ecosystem. The authors suggest a policy of "rescue ecology" to study the remaining ecological information. A study of the adobe walls from historic structures in Fort Bowie National Historic Site was made to determine their physiochemical properties. This information was then used for comparative purposes with the natural soil material from the Historic Site. A soil map was made and representative soil samples collected for laboratory characterization. Finally, areas on the soil map which had high potential for finding adobe material that matched the historic adobe were noted. Map, photographs, and bibliography.
