The paper is an attempt to gather historical records of the black bear from all available sources, including bear hunters. The material was categorized into topics and time sequences. The first major challenge to the survival of the species in what is now GRSM came with overhunting and then logging. With protection from GRSM the population increased, to fall again when the American chestnut fell victim to the virus. It is thought that as the second growth mast-producing trees increase there will be an increase in the bear population.
