Prehistoric geological factors have influenced floral distribution. The relatively uniform vegetation of the Tertiary was separated by the Mississippi Embayment, a probable cause of disjuncts. Glaciation eliminated ranges of species it encountered. Variations in climate (drier, wetter) would favor some species at the expense of others. Emergence of the Coastal Plain would allow tropical species to invade northerly.
