One aspect of the importance of the Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida, is noted in the press release included in the front of this volume: the preserve 'provides nearly 40 per cent of the water required to maintain the ecology of Everglades National Park.' The present study examines the hydrology of the swamp in connection with Congressional decisions about how much of the watershed to include in the preserve to assure sufficient water for the park, the adjacent estuaries, and the increasing population of southwest Florida. The report describes characteristics of 3 subareas with fairly distinct hydrological patterns; topics include storage and movement of water, aquifers, salt-water intrusion, water quality, and hydrobiologic relations. It also discusses water-control works and urban pressures, including probable effects of urban growth on water resources and biota. With maps, graphs, vegetal transects, hydrographs.
