The study objective is to identify major factors responsible for change in surface water quality of this extensive region. In lakes and ponds, vertical light extinction coefficients indicate that light transmission is intermediate between eutrophic and oligotrophic systems. Surface waters have high solute concentrations and are well buffered. Good statistical relationships were found among dominant ions which suggests common derivation. Multiple comparison and SNK tests showed significant differences for HT, color, silica, and total N between lakes and ponds. Regressions of ions known to be influenced by the marine (Na+, Cl-, SO4-)or terrestrial environment (Ca+, K+) with distance inland showed a likely marine influence on surface water quality. First-order stream chemistry appears influenced by topographic aspect. In southern portions of the region, south-facing slopes are vegetated by taiga which accentuates differences in stream chemistry between north and south facing watersheds.
