The paper concerns grain size of sediments in gravel-bed rivers, and the effects of stream sorting. This particularly refers to non-uniform conditions in streams subject to sediment exceeding the stream's capacity to transport it. Redwood Creek, in Redwood National Park, is the example described, with the two study reaches incorporating a recently aggraded area and one recently degraded. This creek was chosen because of the large amount of sediment present in the channel, and the likelihood of considerable variation in the armoring. The study investigates 'spatial variation in the degree of armouring and its relation to channel topography.' Illustrations show cross-sections, topography and facies of the selected reaches, grain-size distributions, and more.
