Molecular genetic studies have clarified the taxonomy of the Plethodontidae, raising the number of species from 16 to 43. The author traces the development and speciation of the ancestral stock in the late Miocene and its distribution in the more arid Pliocene. He also deals with the question of hybridization between closely related species along contact zones.
