This study was undertaken to establish baseline conditions regarding the incidence of beetle-killed spruce in the Brooks Camp area, and to identify potential human activities that might enhance beetle population growth. In 1986 spruce trees were surveyed adjacent to and 5.6 km away from Brooks Camp and at 15 and 200 m on either side of the active service road. Of 641 trees examined, 5.6% were beetle-killed, 4.3% were dead of unknown causes, and 90.1% were alive and healthy. Findings indicate that spruce beetles are at endemic levels and that past and current activities at Brooks Camp have not contributed to an increase in beetle activity.
