In response to a number of resource management issues and public concerns regarding the deer population on Fire island, the Superintendent of Fire Island National Seashore initiated development of a Deer and Vegetation Management Plan. The development of this Plan will be accomplished over the next year in a series of reports and public forums. Through this process, information on the park's resources and the park's objectives will be made available to the public. The public will have a number of opportunities to comment on the development of the Plan. This Statement of Management Objectives is the first of several documents that will be prepared during development of the Deer and Vegetation Management Plan.
