Freshwater California habitat for the coast cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki clarki) is primarily in streams of Redwood National Park (RNP) and adjacent areas north and south. Little was known of population numbers, life history or management in California. This report compiles available information for the California Department of Fish and Game. This report notes, 'stream survey information indicates populations have declined in many waters as a result of habitat degradation largely associated with timber harvesting and road construction.' The list of known populations includes Redwood Creek (with 12 named tributaries), Klamath River (with 18 named tributaries), and Smith River (with 31 named tributaries), along with other drainages outside of RNP. Some improvements in habitats and in land use may indirectly help cutthroat trout.
