Early in the 1996 reproductive season, 14 territories were occupied by paired peregrine falcons. The reprodcutive season resulted in six peregrines successfully fledging from three eyries. At least one other nesting pair of adult peregrines apparently produced hatchlings that did not survive to fledging. By comparison, two fledglings were recorded in 1995 and five in 1994. The reproductive rate this year is 0.43 young per active eyrie. This figure falls below the 1.25 suggested necessary for population maintenance. To establish the relation between eggshell thinning and eyrie success or failure, shells should be retrieved and analyzed. Population-wide productivity could be significantly different if the productivity in the Sierra del Carmen and Maderas del Carmen mountain ranges of adjacent Mexico were known.
