Fish were sampled in the streams of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in June 1980 and July and November 1983 using a backpack electro-shocker. Notes indicate the voltage used, area covered, length of time the shocker ran, air and water temperature, water color, water depth, substrate type, cover, vegetation type, shoreline description, natural fish food (stoneflies, caddisflies, mayflies, crayfish, minnows, etc.) and weather conditions. Streams sampled were Big Beaver, Little Beaver, Bills, Lowney (both branches), Arsenault, Chapel, Section 34, Spray, Sullivan, Sevenmile, and Grand Sable Creeks and Mosquito, Miners, and Hurricane Rivers. The number and size range of each species of fish sampled were recorded. Fish observed were rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris), longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae), blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus), redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos), central mud minnow, bluntnose minnow (Pimephales notatus), brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans), mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi), longnose sucker (Catostomus catostomus), creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), burbot (Lota lota), and northern pike (Esox lucius). Hand-drawn maps indicate locations of some sampling sites.
