This is a proposal to the National Science Foundation for funding to study hyporheic zones in the Zuni Mountains, Jemez Caldera, and Tesuque Watersheds of New Mexico. The hyporheic zone is the subterranean ecosystem below and adjacent to streams and rivers. This is a proposal to investigate the hydrology, geochemistry, and microbial processes occuring in these areas. Specifically, the objectives are to: develop a model to correlate hyporheic and surface water flows; validate the model through hydrologic monitoring and tracer experiments; examine interactions microbial processes and dissolved oxygen, nutrient utilization, and carbon cycling; determine the effect of microbial photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, and nitrogen cycling on riparian vegetation and sedimentation.
