Three brief hypothesis are presented as to the structural origin of the Snake River Plain. Geographic location: Regional including CRMO (Craters of the Moon National Monument) The obvious magnitude of the forces involved in transecting the Rocky Mountains with the Snake River Plain structure, as well as the youth of this structure i.e. CRMO lavas, have important implications for structural origin of the region. Though our knowledge of the rocks of the Snake River Plain may be regarded as usable, our understanding of the process that formed the great depression in which these rocks accumulated remains uncertain. Three currently viable hypotheses of origin are described in the article.
