This 1974 Biological Paper is an altered and published version of an earlier, 1964 unpublished report (see Dean, Frederick C. "Biological investigations of the Baird and Schwatka Mountains, Brooks Range, Alaska, 1963"). The 1974 paper presents the results of a 1963 University of Alaska-Smithsonian Institution study conducted by a joint crew working at five locations in the Baird and Schwatka Mountains whose objective was to perform an ecological reconnaissance and faunal and floral inventories. Sites in the Kobuk drainage were located in the Redstone River valley near Ambler and at Walker Lake in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The Noatak drainage had three sites, one on the lower river and one in Noatak Canyon, both located in Noatak National Preserve, and as well as one site in the upper drainage in Gates of the Arctic. The paper gives a general description of the area and a summary of pre-1963 ornithological work, followed by individual sections presenting the 1963 findings on birds and mammals. Significant records of distribution and/or breeding were obtained for many birds. These were studied by direct observation, and the paper summarizes the ornithological observations accumulated in the region in tabular form. Small mammals were collected largely by systematic grid trapping. Data on medium-sized and large mammals are based on visual observation and analyses of sign.
