The Kvichak sockeye salmon return to two principal spawning areas: the beaches and tributaries of Iliamna Lake and the Newhalen River-Lake Clark complex. Lake Clark is about one-seventh the size of Iliamna Lake, but it is not known how the Kvichak escapement is distributed between these two areas and whether distribution changes from year to year within the 5-year Kvichak cycle. Lake Clark is a collecting basin for many streams wich originate from ice fields and carry a heavy silt load into the lake. As a result of the reduced visibility, spawning ground estimates cannot be made by standard aerial or ground surveys except at a few locations. But estimates made there do not provide a reliable index of the total Lake Clark escapement....
