The major objectives of the Florida Bay studies on wading birds have been 1) to build an awareness in policy makers and the public about the unique b,ird populations of Florida Bay and the ecological status of the Bay as an integral part of the south Florida ecosystem and 2) to compile baseline ecological information on Florida Bay wading birds for assessing their current status and for evaluating effects of future changes in the ecosystem on the wading bird community. Over the past four years, we have documented reproductive success and habitat utilization of three wading bird species nesting in Florida Bay. We concentrated on Great White Herons, Tricolored Herons and Roseate Spoonbills, which utilize different strategies of feeding, different foraging habitats and/or nest at different times of the year. Tricolored Herons and Roseate Spoonbills are officially listed by the State of Florida as Species of Special Concern and the Great White Heron is listed as a Species of Special Concern by the Florida Committee on Rare and Endangered Plants and Animals (FCREPA).
