In the summer and fall of 1949, 35 birds were released on Outer Island -- 26 capercaillie and nine black grouse. Eight more birds were released during the spring of 1950. A minimum of five were observed alive the following April. The last bird was seen in September 1950 and were presumed gone after approximately one year on the island. During this introduction period, extensive predator control was conducted. This was part of a Fish and Wildlife Service and Wisconsin DNR experiment in introducing exotic species.
