Describes the domination of Pacific island streams by Gobiidae. Possible factors affecting the success of Gobiidae include: a marine larval stage, euryhalinity, small size, excellent climbing ability, a range of trophic level from carnivory through omnivory to herbivory, frequent lack of a gas bladder, and a bottom-dwelling life style. Tables show families and numbers of species in Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, Palau, and Cape York.
