An accidental fire in Knowles Canyon on July 4, 1989 burned the hanging garden. The almost complete destruction of the vegetation, and even the soil, offered an opportunity to study succession following a fire. Very little is known about the establishment of hanging garden ecosystems, recruitment of plant species, immigration of vertebrates and invertebrates, or interactions among species during succession. The study involves following the changes over a period of time until the garden reaches a relatively stable stage, if it does so. Knowledge of the processes could be used to hasten recovery of similar areas that might be damaged in the future. Data previously collected over two years is discussed in the 1995 proposal, and the folder includes 24 color slides of the garden monitoring (3/19/90). There is also now a report from October 27, 1995 with 27 p., illus., and extensive bibliography.
