Most of Lassen Volcanic National Park's lakes were originally fishless with the exception of several that connect with native trout streams. Stocking records for the park date back to 1928 and from that date on most of the lakes in the park were stocked on a regular basis. In 1972, the National Park Service implemented a plan to phase out stocking of park waters. This paper is a summary of a lake survey conducted after fish stocking stopped. At each lake data was collected on water temperature, color, clarity, depth, bottom and shoreline type, watershed conditions, and generalizations on the type and intensity of use. The current (1976) status of trout populations in the park were best summarized by discussing the seven lakes which were able to have self-sustaining trout populations.
