This document summarizes an April 1989 reconnaissance survey of Katmai National Park's lower coastal shores and bays that was undertaken to identify and document the presence of oil from the Exxon Valdez spill. The team consisted of four resource specialists from the U.S. National Park Service, Alaska Fire Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. No evidence of oil was found on any of the more than 12 beaches that were visited, with the exception of a few isolated cases of oil globules. Precluding exceptionally severe storm activity or high tide levels, the author believes any direct oil impact on beach vegetation will be negligible. He cautions against clean-up activities involving heavy foot or equipment traffic on plants near the shoreline and also recommends monitoring littoral zones of known importance.
