Part One deals with the physical environment of the park. Includes maps, aerial photographs, rainfall and temperature tables, and information about soils. Part Two is entitled "Biological factors in the environment." Includes checklists of plant and animal species found in the park, including algae, fungi & lichens, bryophytes, flowering plants & ferns, invertebrates (non insects), insects, vertebrates (non birds) and birds. Describes higher elevations, kipukas and soil relations, vegetational response to volcanic activity in chain-of-craters area, Puu Pua`i and devastated area, wetter lowland vegetations, population development on lowland 1955-lava flows, and seaside marine vegetation. Seaside marine vegetation includes littoral shores (black zone and marine caves), pools, intertidal shores, and population development on new lava shores.
