This report presents results from summer aerial surveys for sheep and goats in Wrangell-St. Elias Park and Preserve. Inclement weather precluded counts being completed in all of the 24 Park and Preserve counting units; about 73% of the counting units were successfully censused. This report focuses strongly on Dall sheep and presents data primarily from counting units 2, 12, 13, 21, 14, and 16. The data show that 2,116 sheep were counted in the six units, of which 401 were young-of-the year, 170 were yearlings, 1009 were ewes, 417 were rams, and 119 were unclassified. The authors compare data from this study with data from Denali National Park and Lake Clark National Park. They noted that ram per ewe ratios varied from 13 per 100 to 84 per 100 in the Wrangell-St. Elias units as opposed to 50 to 51 per 100 in the Denali and Lake Clark units. Age units were roughly the same in all three of the Park/Preserve reservations. Other data presented include age associations in ram groups; percent of sheep occuring in mixed sex and single sex groups; social group structure; habitat use; and responses to helicopters.
