Summer Oxygen Depletion in a Diked New England Estuary

This is an investigation of repeated summer hypoxia and anoxia in the Herring River on Cape Cod, an estuarine system that has freshened since it was diked in 1908. Related to these periods of oxygen depletion are extensive fish kills (anadromous herring, Alosa pseudoharengus and A. aestivalis) which have been noted since 1983 during the movement of juvenile fish in July. Water quality monitoring occurring over six years (1984-1989) has shown that this oxygen stress is related to salt marsh diking.
