Surfbirds in Ogilvie and Richardson Mountains, Yukon Territory

Adjacent to/nearby YUCH. A single surfbird chick is reported from the Ogilvie and Richardson Mountains in the Yukon Territory. This finding was the first confirmed evidence of breeding by this species in northwestern Canada, and insofar as breeding records go, represents a rough doubling of the previously known summer range that included east-central Alaska (Mt. McKinley Park, White Mountains in Tanana Hills, and the upper Fortymile River.) Tens of adult surfbirds were seen over several years in addition to this one chick found; this indicates to the author that the species is by no means uncommon in the area and may be considered a characteristic and regular member of the regional avifauna. Surfbirds were seen in the 1300 to 1800 m zone in the Ogilvies and from 800 to 1300 m in the Richardsons.
