A concentration of archeologic sites of mostly Anasazi affiliation exists in the eastern Grand Canyon, all closely associated with Late Holocene sedimentary deposits. Most of the sites occur on or just below the surface of alluvial deposits which form high terraces in that area. Recent erosion, the third such period of accelerated degradation, is damaging sites, mainly through arroyo-cutting resulting from heavy precipitation. Glen Canyon Dam indirectly augments the process by lowering the baselevel through elimination of annual floods and much of the normal sediment load of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon.
