Survey of Dall sheep in the Chugach Mountains of Wrangell-St Elias National Park, 1983 and 1984

During July 1983 and August 1984 aerial surveys of Dall sheep were conducted in the portion of the Chugach Mountains within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Three count units were surveyed in 1983: Nelson Mountain, Spirit Mountain, and Goodlata Mountain. Count data showed a 19% reduction in these units, but the authors note that several factors could have skewed the results. The Granite Range was surveyed in 1984, and the data showed a 15% population increase. The authors noted again that these data may be biased. The total number of sheep counted in the three western count units in 1983 was 155. The 1983 and 1984 survey of Dall sheep shows that the density in the Chugach Mountains is lower than in the neighboring Wrangell Mountains.
