Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAME) was included in a larger study of the distribution and density of the desert tortoise in Southern Nevada. Cottonwood Valley in LAME was an important area of moderately high density of the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), especially in areas with Caliche caves. Most other areas described in this report have a low density of G. agassizii. Report makes recommendations regarding further study, land uses, and protection.
