A Survey of the Birds of Death Valley

A few earlier surveys listed birds of the below-sea-level part of Death Valley, and this author restricts his survey to the same 550 square-mile area. One of the earlier researchers noted the unusual disparity between breeding birds and transients--only about 8 of 120 species were thought to breed below sea level at Death Valley (outside the artificial greenery of the ranch). Other birds have been observed since then, and this paper includes a systematic list of 232 species, many observed by this author. A brief discussion of habitat notes seven distinct types. A surprisingly large number of birds visit Death Valley throughout the year, and the paper discusses seasonal changes in bird species present. A list of selected records describes specific sightings.
