By listening to the audible (to man) echolocation calls of Euderma maculatum, the spotted bat, the authors' surveyed a total of 1,186 sites in 80 areas in western North America between 1 May and 13 August 1983. While most of the areas where we encountered Euderma occurred within the known range of ponderosa pine, Euderma was not restricted to this habitat. Furthermore, the author's failed to find evidence of Euderma in many areas within the range of ponderosa pine. We conclude that Euderma maculatum is widespread but sparsely distributed and uncommon, and make 4 recommendations concerning its conservation. Results are not specific to an area, but there is a reference to the fact that some of the bats were found in Big Bend National Park
