A survey of the fish resources of Saipan Lagoon

Saipan Lagoon surveys were conducted January 2-8 and January 24-29, 1979. Twenty-four habitats within the lagoon and seaward side of the lagoon were censused. Three investigators swam two 10-minute counts, thereafter a complete list of fish was made (in 10 to 20 minutes) in each habitat. Counts from each habitat were averaged. The area covered by the 10 minute census was estimated to be 2,000 m^2, and density of fish per habitat estimated. Fish spawning and nursery areas were determined by 17 horizontal surface tows, and the density per m^3 of fish eggs, larvae and other zooplanton in the lagoon determined. The results describe the 24 different habitats. They describe the distribution and abundance by economically important fish species. They also describe equilibrium yields of exploitable fish populations, fish species diversity, and distribution of fish larvae and eggs. They end with recommendations for habitats which should be protected. There is a checklist of marine fishes observed by habitat.
