The 1994 black-capped vireo survey in Big Bend National Park, May 15-22, found 16 males and 8 females for a total of 24 individuals. Birds were located in Juniper Canyon (7 males and 4 females), Blue Creek Canyon (3 males and 1 female), northwest Pulliam Bluff (3 males and 1 female), Gree Gulch (2 males and 1 female) and Pine Canyon (1 male and 1 female). A nest containing 4 eggs with the female incubating was found in Pine Canyon. Photographs of the nest site and surrounding habitat were taken as were photographs of all other black-capped vireo territories. All territories were marked on topographical maps. No black-capped vireos were found at the following sites: Window Trail, Oak Spring, Campground Canyon, northwest Green Gulch, Maple Canyon, and Panther Junction. Brown-headed cowbird concentrations were highest around Panther Junction and Campground Canyon (especially in the area of the Remuda stables).
