Synchronous Aerial Respiration by the Walking Catfish in Florida
Loftus WF. 1979. Synchronous Aerial Respiration by the Walking Catfish in Florida. Copeia. 1979(1):156-158
Asian walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) can be found in the southern Big Cypress Swamp, FL and Everglades National Park, FL. This article reports that these fish breath in a synchronized fashion. Respiration rates for the catfish were studied at three different locations; at all three locations groups of walking catfish exhibited highly significant synchrony in aerial respiration.
