Provides results of an intensive month-long federal study of the biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of the Big Cypress watershed. This part of south Florida, now partly protected in the Big Cypress National Preserve, faces continuing pressures for development; the report identifies threats recognized in this 1970 survey and the natural resource values in need of protection. It also describes the principal characteristics of the study area, the analyses and resulting data (some presented by geographical unit), and gives details on the water quality. Illustrations include black-and-white photographs of habitat types and development; many data tables, bar charts, maps. The appendices give information on the sampling stations, biological study methods, analytical data, and hourly variation studies. The third appendix includes bacteriological data (a number of coliform graphs), as well as a summary of physical and chemical results, and annotated species lists (algae, aquatic plants, terrestrial plants, invertebrates, fish, and birds).
