This thesis study focuses on the lichens of Peaks of Otter (Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway). The brief introductory section covers climate, geology, and previous botanical studies in this area, noting a lack of previous information about Virginia's lichens. In addition to identifying the various lichen species, the study includes documenting the frequency of occurrence within this part of the park (based on frequency of collection). The list of lichen species found in 10 representative habitat types contains 169 entries; each gives scientific name, frequency, substrate, and collection area. Additional pages list some species according to habitat: cosmopolitan species, or those found on split-rail fences or exposed trees. The Peaks area is ecologically diverse, and the concluding section suggests that the total number of lichen taxa there is probably higher than reported in this thesis. With a map showing collecting location, and a chart indicating ecological habitats of each.
