Taxonomy of Abies in the Southern Appalachians; Variation in Balsam Monoterpenes and Wood Properties

Thor E and Barnett PE. 1974. Taxonomy of Abies in the Southern Appalachians; Variation in Balsam Monoterpenes and Wood Properties. Forest Science. 20(132 - 40)

Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of terpenes from 8 sites in the Southern Appalachians were matched with 5 from the Virginia region and 5 from Pennsylvania - New York. Large differences were noted in terpenes from each of the three regions, with those in the Virginia area being intermediate. The authors recommend that there be one species and three subspecies for this group.
